Purport
“The combined vibration caused by the sound of all the conches reverberated through the sky and the whole of the earth, shattering the hearts of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.”
nabhaśca... anunādayan... sa ghoṣaḥ...vyadārayat The sound of the conches which reverberated through the sky and the entire earth, broke the hearts of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Though the uproar reverberated all over, it shattered the hearts of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons alone, who were the opponents of the Pāṇḍavas. It is seen many a times that the great sound of the conch that Kṛṣṇa blows with his sweet lips causes great joy in the hearts of those favourable towards HIM and always eager to hear it. However, the same sound burns the hearts of those enemies who do not surrender to HIM.
dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ This word tells us that the hearts of all the 100 sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were shattered. Not even one out of them was optimistic about their victory after hearing this sound.
vyadārayat (Shattered their hearts) How can a sound shatter hearts? It is said so because, the moment that reverberating sound reached their ears, a very strong feeling that their entire army was destroyed, struck their hearts. The feeling that everything was over, greatly disturbed their minds.
At a time when Dhṛtarāṣṭra strongly desired the victory of his sons, Sañjaya spoke these words to Dhṛtarāṣṭra which showed clear signs of their imminent defeat.
